The Community Dinner was a raging success. We were delighted and moved by how many people came. People came early and stayed late. People brought their dogs and their babies. People laughed loud and sat at long tables. Everybody ate.
So many folks pitched in to help make this happen. Six households lent us folding tables, Headlong graciously let us use their office, three different kitchens donated time and space to get this meal cooked, Bayla’s brother came early to help set up!
We felt so grateful to everyone who helped out, everyone who showed up, everyone we know and work with. What a lovely way to spend an evening.
On a personal note, I am hardly ever happier than when I’m cooking with people I love. The last time I got to do this was at my wedding, almost exactly two years ago. The two days I got to spend in the kitchen with the Mechanicians reminded me, once again, why these are some of the people I most love to make art with.
The food was yummo, too: potato samosas with lemon-dill-yogurt and soy-ginger dipping sauces by Maria Shaplin, gentle rice pilaf, stewed greens (collards, cabbage, kale, chard) with coriander and fenugreek, Cypriot giant bean stew, with vegan pumpkin pie and lemon-frosted California cake for dessert. Also should mention that Thomas got Trader Joe’s to donate two bags each of potatoes, onions, and chard to the cause. This whole thing: a community effort and a celebration of community. Go Team Everyone!
Love, Becky
